Cologne – Melaten

We visited Cologne last week. Just relaxing and doing the things we like. That’s usually visiting our favourite places, drinking coffee and walking through the city 🙂 .
Our hotel was just a stones throw away from the large Melaten Cemetery .
The cemetery is kind of a public park and perfect for a short (or long) walk.

I like those large and old cemeteries, because the atmosphere automatically forces you to calm down. The oldest grave I have seen is from 1820 and some of these older graves are financially supported by locals or the city to preserve them.

You can even find guides to find graves from celebrities.
We passed the graves from Dirk Bach (German comedian), Guido Westerwelle (German politican) and Nicolaus August Otto (Inventor of the Otto engine).

One thing we noticed is, that people from Cologne are a bit more open-minded to the topic of death and dying than other regions. You may see that on some of my photos. Some tombstones are decorated with soccer balls for example – I like that!

Stay tuned for more photos from Cologne, which I will show you soon.

Enjoy the weekend!
