Yes, even in the urban area of the “Ruhrgebiet” you can find places where you can spot birds and other animals. And surprisingly it wasn’t that difficult. The place we lived before, the “Lüneburger Heide” in Lower Saxony is known for it’s agriculture. But that also means that there are so many fields with mono cultures, that birds and other animals can’t find enough food to survive. That’s crazy, right? I can remember days when I was outside and did not see a considerable amount of birds. That’s a alarming situation!

It’s not much better in North Rhine-Westphalia but we found a small area which is protected and where you can walk along the river “Ruhr”. With a little luck it’s possible to spot different (water) birds.. and squirrels. 🙂
